Cycads are ancient, slow-growing, and palm-like plants that belong to the family Cycadaceae. They are often referred to as “living fossils” because they have existed for over 250 million years, dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. Cycads typically have a stout, woody trunk topped with a crown of large, stiff, and feather-like leaves. These plants are dioecious, meaning that individual plants are either male or female, producing cones instead of flowers for reproduction.

Cycads thrive in tropical and subtropical regions and are valued both for their ornamental beauty and their ecological role, as they often form symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots. Despite their hardy appearance, many cycad species are endangered due to habitat loss and over-collection. They are unique for their striking foliage, slow growth, and ability to survive in harsh conditions, making them a remarkable example of plant evolution.
